This medal is awarded for the Best Academic Performance in the Graduating Class in All Disciplines of the BS-MS (Dual Degree) Programme. Student with highest CPI score on completion of the 5-year course will be awarded with this medal.
DIRECTOR’S GOLD MEDAL 2014
This medal is awarded for Outstanding All Round Achievement and Leadership in the Graduating Class in All Disciplines of the BS-MS (Dual Degree) Programme. This award is based on the CPI and participation in student activities (co-curricular, extra-curricular, sports and student activities within the Department)
PROFICIENCY MEDALS 2014
This medal is awarded for the Best Academic Performance in Each Discipline of the BS-MS (Dual Degree) Programme. There will be four proficiency medals one each for Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Student with highest CPI score in a given Discipline on completion of the 5-year course will be awarded a Proficiency medal in that Discipline.

Sai Puneet Desai, Department of Chemistry

Puneet joined IISER Bhopal as an INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) fellow in 2009. He secured the highest possible Semester Performance Index (SPI) of 10.0 in three semesters. He was awarded the C.N.R. Rao Education Foundation Prize for securing the highest SPI in the 1st semester. With a Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 9.56 (on a scale of 10.0), he is ranked 1st in the graduating class. He has also been a recipient of the DAAD WISE (2012) and Mitacs Globalink (2013) fellowships, which he received for carrying out quality research work in Germany and Canada, respectively. During his stay at IISER Bhopal, he has shown keen interest in various sports such as football, cricket and volleyball. He has represented IISER Bhopal at the Inter IISER Sports Meet (IISM) in football and volleyball. He is an avid quizzer and he has secured top spots in many competitions. He will be pursuing his doctoral studies in Chemistry at University of Minnesota, USA, one of the top ranked institutions in his area of interest.

Akash Jain, Department of Physics
Akash joined IISER Bhopal as an INSPIRE fellow in 2009. He is a founder member of IISER Bhopal’s science club, ‘Singularity’, started in 2010. Later in 2011, he founded the Students Activity Council (SAC), and drafted its first constitution. He served as Vice-President to the SAC, after which he moved to the SAC advisory board. Akash also designed the students’ website of IISER Bhopal and served as its webmaster for two years. He was editor of the Institute’s Physics newsletter, ‘Geodesics’, in 2013 and was member of the editorial board of Institute magazine, ‘Uday’, in 2011. He was also among the organizing teams of the cultural fest, ‘Enthuzia’, and the science fest, ‘Singularity’, of IISER Bhopal. He took ample interest in various institute activities. Akash is also passionate about theoretical physics, chess, cycling, and computer programming. He has secured admission to the Ph.D. programme in Physics in Durham University, UK.

Biological Sciences
Aseem Shrivastava, Proficiency Medal in Biological Sciences
Aseem joined IISER Bhopal in the year 2009 as an INSPIRE fellow, with an aim to pursue a career in Physics but during the course work he got fascinated with Biology and subsequently majored in Biological Sciences. He is a Khorana Scholar and has an international peer reviewed journal publication to his credit. He believes that an intellectually enriching and very helpful environment in the Department of Biological Sciences has been a key to his success. He will graduate with a Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 9.32 and has offers to pursue Ph.D. from two universities in USA, UT Southwestern Medical Center and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, and also from University of Heidelberg in Germany.
Chemistry
Sai Puneet Desai, Proficiency Medal in Chemistry
Puneet has secured the highest possible Semester Performance Index (SPI) of 10.0 in three semesters. He aims at becoming a pioneer in the field of organometallic chemistry. His long term goal is to synthesize cost effective dye sensitized solar cells. He also wants to venture into the field of bioinorganic chemistry and photocatalysis. He will be joining University of Minnesota, USA, for pursuing his doctoral studies in Chemistry.
Mathematics
Gosavi Saurabh Madan, Proficiency Medal in Mathematics
Saurabh joined IISER Bhopal as an INSPIRE Fellow in 2009. He was jointly awarded the C.N.R. Rao Education Foundation Prize with Sai Puneet Desai in his first semester for securing the highest SPI He has secured 8th rank in Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Entrance Test (CSIR-NET) and has also been awarded the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Ph.D. scholarship. Graduating with a CPI of 8.71, Saurabh plans to attend University of Georgia, USA, for his doctoral studies.
Physics
Akash Jain, Proficiency Medal in Physics
Akash joined IISER Bhopal as an INSPIRE fellow in 2009. He was awarded C.N.R. Rao Education Foundation Prize for securing highest SPI in his second semester. In 2012, he was selected for DAAD-WISE fellowship for a three month internship in Germany. In the Physics Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS), he received a perfect score of 990. During his project work in the final year he published two articles in peer-reviewed journals and has secured an ‘O’ (Outstanding) grade in his project work. Graduating with a CPI of 9.41, Akash will be joining Durham University, UK, for his doctoral studies in String Theory.
